The K-9 Unit is part of the Special Operations Division within the Sandy Springs Police Department. The unit currently has four K-9 teams. The three patrol K-9s are Belgian Malinois and assist officers in the apprehension of suspects, lost person location, evidence recovery, narcotics detection, officer and citizen protection, crime prevention, and favorable public relations promotion and deterrence of criminal activity. The one human remains detection (HRD) K-9 is highly trained to help locate the remains of deceased individuals. The HRD K-9 can find entire remains, skeletal remains, body parts, and even buried bones that are over 100 years old. The HRD K-9 can also help locate drowned victims in water and scattered remains over large areas. Our K-9s provide high-community visibility to promote a sense of security among the public.
