The bicycle patrol’s primary function under the direction of the Special Operations Division is patrolling around the new City Springs and the surrounding downtown area. They also provide security for the many events held on the City Green and new Performance Arts Center. The unit is utilized in many different ways. The Sandy Springs Police Bicycle Patrol works in teams of two, riding specially equipped police bikes to regularly patrol the city’s parks, shopping centers, and residential neighborhoods. The bicycles allow officers access to areas that a vehicle cannot go, such as trails, side yards, and alleys. Bikes also provide a low-key response, which is necessary for some situations, and are very useful when pursuing a suspect on foot. The SSPD Bicycle Patrol also participates in neighborhood meetings, city events, and bike safety rodeos.
